First Chick of the Season Named ‘Frekhan’

IFHC announces the winning name for its first captive bred Houbara of the season in its ‘Name the Chick’ competition

Abu Dhabi, 18 March 2015:The International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) announced the winner of its ‘Name the Chick’ campaign today. Submitted by 9-year-old Khaled Ali Abdulla from Future Academy School in Al Ain, ‘Frekhan’ was selected by the Fund as the name for the less than one month old baby Houbara – the first captive bred chick to hatch this season.

A play on the word ‘chick’ with connotations of ‘cute’ and ‘little’, Khaled Ali Abdulla’s suggested namewas selected out of 400 entries received by the IFHC and will receive an iPad Air for the winning entry.

Speaking on the culmination of the competition, Mohammed Saleh Al Baidani, Director General at the International Fund for Houbara Conservation commented, “We at the IFHC were truly impressed by not only the number of entries we received as part of this competition, but also the thought and effort that went into each submission Selecting the winner was a challenge but in the end we selectedFrekhan for its imaginative play on words and suitability for our fuzzy new friend. We look forward to bringing children across the UAE news of Frekhan as part of our ongoing efforts to engage the youth in our conservation efforts.”

The campaign was supported by Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) which features lessons on the Houbara, led by the IFHC, as part of its curriculum. Several schools across the emirate participated, including Al Dana, Hunain, Al Taawun, Al Khatem and Al Zallaqa, where children received presentations on the work of the IFHC before submitting their entries. Children from across the UAE were also encouraged to take part via social media channels. Working with the youth to educate them on the importance of conservation and the Houbara is central to the work of the IFHC, and it hopes its ‘Name the Chick’ campaign will become an annual event in its calendar.
