Abu Dhabi, 4 March 2015:The International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC) has launched an exciting new campaign calling on school aged children to name the first chick of the season to hatch, as part of its Houbara bustard breeding programme.

IFHC will also be collecting entries in person at schools across Abu Dhabi, as part of its workshops which have been incorporated into the curriculum by Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC).

Speaking on the launch of the competition, Mohammed Saleh Al Baidani, Director General at the International Fund for Houbara Conservation commented, “Education has always been a focal point for the activities of the IFHC as we work towards raising awareness of the Houbara bustard and wider conservation issues. As part of our holistic conservation programme, our educational initiatives are designed to ensure future generations appreciate the importance of these efforts. With the use of fun activities such as the ‘Name the Chick’ competition, we hope to engage the youth with this aim in mind.”

The competition will run for three weeks with the winner being selected by the IFHC team and announced on 16 March 2015. The winner will receive an iPad air and of course the Houbara will be named according to their suggestion.

IFHC breeds Houbara bustards with the aim of repopulating the species in the wild. To date, the Fund has bred a total of over 200,000 birds, with over half of those having been released into the wild.
