Date : 10/09/2018

Description :

Event will see launch of first book on the natural history of the Asian Houbara bustard

The International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC), one of the world’s leading conservation programmes, will be participating at the upcoming Abu Dhabi Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX), which will take place from 25 to 29 September at the National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) in Abu Dhabi. IFHC’s participation will include the unveiling of a book detailing the ecology of the Asian Houbara.

IFHC’s stand will include the latest technology, which brings to life the natural history of a bird, which is redolent with centuries of local culture and heritage, as well as the conservation efforts pioneered in Abu Dhabi to preserve the species for future generations. A sliding screen tracing the history of the Houbaraprogramme, which was initiated by the late Sheikh Zayed in the 1970s, will be a focal point for those wanting to know more about this ground-breaking conservation programme. Visitors will also get to see live Houbara on the stand and a dedicated Kids’ Corner will have activities for children to both enjoy and learn.

Commenting on IFHC’s participation at ADIHEX, His Excellency Majid Al Mansouri, Managing Director, IFHC, said: “The Houbara has been an essential element of our history for thousands of years. It is embedded in our culture from the stories that have been passed down through the generations. When Sheikh Zayed set out to restore and preserve the Houbara, it was not just the species he was saving, but a way of life. At ADIHEX people can find out more about the Houbara, the work done to conserve it and how it relates to our heritage.”

During the event, IFHC will unveil the first major book detailing the natural history of the Asian Houbara. Using data gathered over many decades through the Abu Dhabi Houbaraprogramme, ‘A Natural History of the Asian Houbara Bustard’ is the definitive story of this naturally shy bird. One of the co-authors, Mohammed Saleh Al Baidhani, Director General, IFHC, will be on the IFHC stand to talk about the book.

During ADIHEX, IFHC will be announcing its latest annual results for the number of Houbara produced in its four centres around the world, as well the number of birds that have been used to reinforce the global populations of the Asian and North African Houbara.

About The International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC)

Initiated by the late Sheikh Zayed, Abu Dhabi undertook a programmer to restore the threatened Houbara bustard. A global conservation strategy was developed and the implemented over the past forty years with the objective of ensuring the species has a sustainable future in the wild through effective and appropriate conservation programmes and management plans. From 1995, the conservation strategy adopted consisted in an integrated approach combining sound ecology, protection measures in the wild, conservation breeding and reinforcement programmers. IHFC was created in 2006 to take the original programme further by managing international assets and securing partnerships across the range of the Houbara that encourage sustainable practices to ensure the conservation of Houbara.
